Description

This is a repeat of November’s 2022 sell out event.

The Dark Tales now team turn their attention to even worse stories of villainy. Sinister Masterplan (Laura Sampson, storyteller, and Sam Enthoven, Thereminist) return, this time with the gruesome details of local butcher – in every sense – Dick Turpin, late of Buckhurst Hill.

And from Epping to Hull to the New World - Who Says Crime Doesn't Pay?  Julia Stallard will introduce us to Mary Brazier, one of Dick Turpin's lesser-known accomplices, who made her living aiding and abetting the infamous highwayman. No lady and no stranger to danger, but with one eye always on the prize, she has a story or two to tell!

Copped Hall has wonderful windows, allowing plenty of light into the building on all sides, with the exception of the ladies bedroom. Already North facing, the 1895 Victorian extension  made this room even darker, devoid of direct daylight even in the height of summer. An unwise and ill-thought through design?  Or a deliberate choice? By coincidence, Bram Stoker’s Dracula was published at almost exactly the same time...

Sound Artist Gary Stewart will perform his extraordinary soundscape accompanying a montage from FW Murnau’s classic 1922 silent film, Nosferatu. We’re also promised an exciting new experience, specific to Copped Hall, from The Witch of Brussels. Martin and Rose specialise in spoken word, sonic experimentations, bass, beats, and dark intonations.

Sound artists Robin the Fog and Catherine Smith will work their magic with an array of quarter-inch tape machines creating live resonances never previously heard in Copped Hall.

The Copped Hall bar will be open serving drinks, including our very own beers, and a roaring fire will warm you in the ground floor Servants’ Hall.
