Education Days One of the very rewarding aspects of our educational activities has been the visits and activities of the primary school children who come from numerous local schools. These are organised by the ever-enthusiastic Frances Chapman see her article below. The atmosphere and range of subject matter at Copped Hall offer rich material to inspire the children, as can be seen from the work they produce. The study days this year will take place in the saloon. As well as our two regular speakers (William Tyler and Peter Lawrence), we have a new speaker Gill Perry who is professor of Art History at the Open University. She will be explaining the very interesting roles of actresses in the 18th century in relation to their portraits and their relevance on the is study day comes only a few days before the same room is filled (hopefully) which, in itself, is pretty educational! The garden workshops and drawing classes are very popular, with one of the drawing classes already full and the garden workshops filling quickly. Alan Cox |

School Visits Last year we had two very successful Education Days at Copped Hall. On a beautiful, warm, sunny June day, 22 children who love art, from 11 different schools, visited for a whole day, just to draw, sketch, paint and crayon. They could choose any subject they liked within the house or on the top lawn. Dave Karaskas brought the Rolls-Royce out for the children, which proved extremely popular.

In the morning the children chose their various subjects and started sketching. The afternoon was spent building up the children’s main pieces of work to create finished pictures at the end of the day. The results were so good, and all the children said how much they enjoyed the day, especially having completed a piece of work at the end. The pictures have been displayed in the Education Room and kept on disk. During July we had another set of 22 children from different schools, this time those who love history and creative writing. The morning was spent in small groups going around the house and garden, each group with one of our Copped Hall guides. Afterwards the children dressed up in Georgian costume in Lady Henrietta ’s bedroom, and we talked about the lives of the people who once lived in the mansion. The afternoon was spent in the garden, with the children writing and acting out scenes from Midsummer Night’s Dream. This was another successful day with excellent work at the end. Again all the children's writing has been displayed in the Education Room. My thanks go to the schools for their encouragement and support and also to those Frances Chapman |
