The aggressive development proposals for Copped Hall and its park from 1986 onwards upset many people – as Copped Hall was a much valued place, both locally and nationally. A fact even recognised by the inspector at the M25 Inquiry. Support grew for counter proposals to save Copped Hall and transfer it to secure benign ownership.

Support came from many individuals, prominent or otherwise, from local conservation groups and from national organisations like SAVE Britain's Heritage, The Georgian Group, Victoria and Albert Museum, etc… This support was vital in creating the excellent situation we have today.

The loans required to finance the purchase of Copped Hall by the Trust were not easily forthcoming due to the dereliction of the site. Support was offered from the Midland Bank but in the end the loans were obtained from The Architectural Heritage Fund and a private Trust. The loans have all now been repayed.

Since purchase, the Trust has been given much valued financial support by Epping Forest District Council and Essex County Council. We have also been helped by The Grange Farm Trust, The Essex Heritage Trust, The Epping Society, The Lyndhurst Trust, The Prince of Wales Charitable Foundation and many other organisations and individuals.

The Trust's open days and guided tours bring financial benefits as well as much approval for what has been achieved – which is very encouraging. Support also comes in other ways – for example, the return of original Copped Hall stonework from Bullwood Hall and the private gardens of Mr.Torr and Mr.Endersby. The Trust Archive continues to receive important historic photographs, information and reminiscences from supporters far and wide.

The Friends of the Copped Hall Trust provide strong support both financially – with over 1000 paid up members – and through the growing number of volunteers who work both in the gardens and the buildings.
